Quality of Lankan foods, beverages reach international standards by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The quality of locally manufactured foods and beverages has risen to international standards with many local companies growing their share of exports and successfully obtaining internationally recognised certification such as ISO and HACCP in recent years. However, the industry is handicapped by the costly and inconsistent raw material supply, limitations in packaging, pressure from the informal market and foreign investor friendly revenue policy, heavy tax burden and shortage of competent management said, President, Sri Lanka Food Processor's Association, Asoka Gopallawa. He was addressing the Annual Pro Foods/Pro Pack Exhibition 2004 and the 5th BIMST-EC Expert Group Forum at the BMICH on Friday. He said that the processed Food and Beverage Industry in Sri Lanka is on the verge of an impressive entrance into the mainstream economic activity and gaining its right place and the exhibition is an opportunity for the consumer to meet Sri Lanka's giants in the food processing field. For entrepreneurs it is an opportunity to be informed and educated about the industry and for the industry itself it is an ideal opportunity to integrate into a stable and strong organisation, Gopallawa said. Around 150 national and international stalls consisting of processed foods and beverage, raw material for the processing industry, machinery, training institutions, packaging and packaging technology displayed their products at the exhibition. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse was the chief guest on the occasion. |
