Murali to Australia for surgery

by Sa'adi Thawfeeq

Sri Lanka's world Test wicket record holder Muttiah Muralitharan was to leave for Melbourne last night to undergo surgery in his right arm.

Sri Lanka team manager Ajith Jayasekera said yesterday that Muralitharan would be under the care of surgeon Dr David Young.

"We spoke to Dr. Young last night and Murali will be leaving for Australia tonight to have surgery. We hope to have the results back by Saturday and if all goes well Murali can return on Sunday," said Jayasekera.

Muralitharan (32) was forced to withdraw from the on-going second cricket Test against South Africa due to intense pain in his bowling shoulder.

According to Jayasekera he bowled with some pain in the first Test at Galle where he captured five wickets to go past Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne's tally of 527 Test wickets. Muralitharan has 532 wickets.

Surgery means that Muralitharan will miss the five one-day internationals against South Africa due to commence August 20 at the R. Premadasa Stadium. He is also doubtful for the ICC Champions trophy tournament in England next month.

"Murali has been having shoulder pains for months now. He looks to be suffering from two problems, basic wear and tear of the shoulder joint and a build-up of fluid around a nerve, from overuse, which is not usually a serious condition," said Sri Lanka team physio C.J. Clarke.

"Until we know what the surgeon has done we cannot speculate on how long he will be out of action. If the fluid is drained and that relieves the pain then he could be back for the Champions trophy, which is our aim at the moment. But if Young decides to clean up the joint, or discovers something else that is wrong, then he could be out for longer," he said.

It was Dr. Young who operated on Muralitharan when he injured his right shoulder on an earlier occasion at Sharjah in early 2002.
