The Ministry of Public Security Law and Order has officially apprised the Registration of Persons Department about this requirement with instructions to gather all statistical data in this connection from Divisional Secretariats. Registration of Persons Department Deputy Commissioner P. P. K. Abeysiri Gunawardene told the Daily News yesterday that they had received instructions from the Public Security Ministry to organise a program to ensure that every citizen in the country, aged 18 and above, get their NICs before the next election. "The department had sent letters to several Divisional Secretaries to gather information regarding persons who do not possess NICs and submit a report", Gunawardene said. Meanwhile, the Daily News learns that the Government will introduce an urgent amendment to make NICs compulsory to every citizen to vote and opposition views are being sought to pass the Bill by joint consensus.
