Govt will support LTTE's peace building moves - Mangala

by Manjula Fernando and Nadira Gunatilleke

The government yesterday said the it would publicly support any peace building activity of the LTTE while discouraging any moves deterrent to peace.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Mangala Samaraweera addressing the weekly Cabinet briefing yesterday condemned the killing of two Eastern Province EPDP activists, Seenithambi Yogarajah and Arthmalingam Ramanee allegedly by the LTTE, stressing that the continuation of such assassinations would have a serious impact on the Ceasefire Agreement.

"It is the 'bounden duty' of the main signatories of the CFA to prevent such gross violations of the agreement," the Minister stressed adding that the Government was fully committed to continue the peace process and see an early resumption of the negotiations.

The minister observed that the spate of political killings in the North and East as well as in the South has put a great strain on the peace process.

"We would like to see an early resumption of talks so that we can sit across a table and discuss our differences face to face," Minister Samaraweera said adding that the Government's commitment was amply demonstrated by the authorisation of duty free vehicles to the LTTE's Peace Secretariat recently.

"This is in stark contrast to the last UNP government which gave many questionable concessions to the LTTE in a secretive manner," the Cabinet spokesman said.

"A recent request by the LTTE to transport its cadres from Omanthai to Sampur on two occasions was declined by the Government, although it was sanctioned under the CFA, in view of the sensitive security situation in the East," he added.

The LTTE has requested Army escort to transport 90 cadres from Omanthai to Sampur on August 9 and further 45 cadres on August 12. It has been turned down by the Government. The Government has also sought SLMM intervention on reports that the LTTE was setting up new bunkers near the Trincomalee harbour. "We are awaiting their response," the Minister said.
