by Sandasen Marasinghe A 9-year-old boy died of burn injuries on the same day his mother delivered another child to the family. The incident was reported from Miriswatte in Negombo. The boy suffered critical burn injuries while trying to warm himself from a burning brick kiln. The side wall of the kiln collapsed causing severe burn injuries to the boy. The mother of the boy had been admitted to hospital for delivery while the father had gone to visit her at the time of the incident. The victim, P. A. D. Dilan Taruka succumbed to his injuries at the Colombo National Hospital. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. on August 06. P. A. Nadeeshani (13) elder sister of the victim said in evidence before City Coroner Edward Ahangama that her brother went to the brick kiln to warm up himself at the time of the incident. She heard a sound from the direction of the kiln and when she rushed there and found a side wall of the kiln fallen. She heard her brother crying and when she screamed her uncle came to the scene. The bricks were removed with a mamotty and brother was taken out. Then he was taken to the Negombo Hospital and was transferred to the Colombo National. P. A. D. Christopher Paul (40) father of the victim said his youngest child was born on the day of this unfortunate incident. City Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death. Evidence was led by Negombo Police. |
