The role of International Non-Governmental Organisations in assisting the government's re-construction programs in the affected Muslim areas of the North-East by the recent ethnic conflict is considered to be important. The Secretary General of Democratic Unity Alliance (DUA) Hafiz Nazeer Ahamed made this observation when he met United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Senior Regional Advisor to Sri Lanka Wuria Karadaghy at his office in Colombo on Tuesday August 10. Hafiz Nazeer who headed a five member delegation from DUA requested the UNDP to ensure that the funds allocated by International Funding Agencies should be equally distributed towards the reconstruction and rehabilitation activities in the affected areas of North and East. He said the Muslim community suffered heavily during the ethnic conflict by losing their traditional places of living, lives and property. He pointed out that there was no constructive program set out for displaced or affected Muslim families in the North East for up-lift their living standard. As a humanitarian request Mr. Ahamed underlined the importance of establishing self-employment projects, with the assistance of the UNDP for the Muslim women who lost their husbands during the ethnic war in the North-East. He assured that DUA would undertake the task of submitting suitable projects ear-marked by the local NGOs shortly as requested by the UNDP. The delegation included DUA Chairman and the former Parliamentarian, M. I. Uthumalebbe, National Organiser DUA and WPC Member, A. J. M. Muzammil, DUA Deputy Chairman, Y. L. M. Zawahir, DUA Deputy Secretary General, Khalid M. Farouk and DUA High Command Member, S. S. M. Assam. |
