by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva has pledged swift measures to upgrade the Kalmunekudi Hospital which is 150 years old. An OPD treatment section and an administrative unit will be constructed at Rs. 50 million for the hospital. The Minister gave this pledge during an inspection tour of the East where he visited the hospital to look into its shortcomings. The hospital provides health services to nearly 500,000 Tamils and Muslims living between Batticaloa and Ampara. The lack of a separate unit for patients seeking OPD treatment is an urgent need as nearly 400 patients arrive daily at the hospital seeking OPD treatment. "The proposed new OPD unit will fulfil this long-felt need," a senior Ministry spokesman said. Minister de Silva has agreed to provide consultant doctors to ensure smooth functioning of the basic consultancy services at the hospital. He also promised to make arrangements to provide accommodation to doctors and nurses serving at the hospital. It was also agreed to establish a new ward complex to cater to child and maternity health-care. The Minister also handed over drugs and medical equipment amounting to Rs. 5 million to the hospital and opened a newly refurbished ward. Minister de Silva stressed that the Government is committed to serve every single area of the country. "The Government's intention is to provide an equal and quality service to people living all over the country." All hospitals in the North-East will also be upgraded, the Minister said. |
