by P. Krishnaswamy Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle has formulated a scheme where consumers will receive rice at Rs. 27 per kg from CWE outlets throughout the country from next week, Dinesh Fernando, Ministry Media Secretary told the Daily News yesterday. This is sequel to discussions the Minister had with farmers and their agents recently after the Yala paddy harvest, Fernando said. The Minister also undertook visits to the Eastern Province, the rice bowl of the country. Arrangements have been finalised to purchase rice at reasonable prices from farmers, transport them to CWE warehouses to be stored during the weekend and start distribution from next Monday, Fernando said, adding that the sale of rice through CWE outlets at this price will continue uninterrupted. This venture which is not profit-oriented is part of the UPFA Government's drive to arrest the soaring cost of living and to provide relief to the people, he said. |
