Army launches raids on guerrilla bases in western Nepal KATHMANDU, Wednesday (Xinhua) Hundreds of troops launched raids on the anti-government guerrillas' hideouts in a remote mountainous district of western Nepal, a Royal Nepal Army officer said. "The army planned to penetrate rebel-held areas in Achham district, about 600 km west of Kathmandu, and flush the guerrillas out," The Rising Nepal newspaper on Wednesday quoted Yagya Bahadur Rajaure, an officer at the army regional headquarters in Nepalgunj city, as saying. The army received information suggesting that top guerrillas leaders were gathering in the district for a rally, Rajaure said. Army helicopters dropped pamphlets warning villagers about the raids and urging them to stay away from the rallies organized by the guerrillas, he noted. However, life in the district is normal, and no attacks from any side have been unleashed there till Tuesday night, he added. |
