New methodology for road construction : Specialised agency for dredging operations vital - Chamber Chairman by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The Chamber of Construction Industry Sri Lanka deliberated on two of the current important concerns of the construction Industry namely sand and roads at their first annual sessions at the Hotel Colombo Plaza on Tuesday. The objective of the session was to provide a forum for all construction related agencies, institutes and professionals to discuss and exchange ideas and to arrive at an agenda of action to solve the national problem. Addressing the gathering the Chairman of the Chamber Surath Wickramasinghe said that the Chamber's efforts are geared to finding a solution to the crisis caused by river and mining restrictions and the time is right to determine the new methodology for road construction. The Chamber has offered its services to the Government to undertake stockpile management and handle sand distribution. It also proposes that as a long-term solution it is necessary to establish a specialised Agency for dredging operations. Such an agency could be incorporated as a Public Limited Liability Company and shall take the form of a Public-Private Partnership with foreign collaboration. The Chamber will also promote the project encompassing all stakeholders of the industry by being equity shareholders of the proposed joint venture. The speakers at the two-day workshop said that with restrictions imposed on river sand mining the construction industry has faced a crisis situation and thus could have been well avoided if the decision makers had taken timely action years ago on the reports made and studies carried out by many experts locally and internationally. Over 200 participants in the construction field attended the workshop. |
