'Keep A9 road open 24 hours to improve business'

by Ramani kangaraarachchi

The President of the Chamber of Commerce, Jaffna R. Jeyaraja has called upon the government to keep the A9 road open 24 hours of the day in order to facilitate and improve their businesses.

He said that earlier people in Jaffna did only buying and selling but now they have started small industries as well. As trading has improved many people visit Jaffna for business purposes and therefore it is very necessary to transport their goods regularly.

Nearly 30 leading companies from the south have confirmed their participation at the trade fair to be held in Jaffna by the end of this month and if the A9 road is open round the clock it will encourage more organisations to participate in the event, he said.

When questioned about the LTTE charging taxes from vehicles using the A9 road in uncleared areas he justified that it is even cheaper to pay the taxes to the government and the LTTE as they had to pay 45 US dollars per cubic metre earlier when only sea transport was provided.

Jeyaraja said that all hotels and restaurants were fully booked last month and around 50,000 expatriates came from Canada, UK, France, Australia and Germany. Managers of the hotels such as Tinnakural, Bastian confirmed this situation.

However, the main hotels such as Subash, Gnanam, and Ashok along with some fishing and agricultural areas are still occupied by the Army and Police and therefore those areas are yet to be developed, he said.
