by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy South Group Correspondent

The inaugural session of the fourth Provincial Council administration of the Central Provincial Council was held at the council's complex at Pallekelle. D. Madhyugarajah was elected as its Chairman on Thursday.

Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said that he was happy that D. Madyugarajah has been appointed as the Chairman of the Central Provincial Council once again and expressed confidence that he would discharge his duties in an impartial manner and provide leadership to the council.

The Chief Minister said that the United People's Freedom Alliance has secured a decisive victory in the recent elections and has a good majority to work.

'We have won the confidence of the people and must now work for the common good of the people. He appealed to the opposition for their co-operation for the success of their programmes.

"We can join hands and work to uplift the province in areas where it is needed," he said.

Leader of the Opposition Wasantha Aluvihare said he looked forward to a good working relationship and assured UNP support to the administration in power in all its good work but said he will not hesitate to oppose any move which may not be beneficial for the people.

'This council is a blend with youth and experience as there are two chief ministers of the past and special feature is that there are five woman provincial councillors for the first time all from the opposition camp.

Aluvihare said that the Chief Minister has an important role to play and you can count on our support and co-operation on all good work on common objectives. Please have a good rapport with the opposition and we will help you to achieve your goals.

D. Madhyugarajah who was elected Chairman thanked members for the confidence reposed on him and looked forward to their support and co-operation for the successful running of the council.

He said that there are five women councillors but all seated with the opposition but he was hopeful that this will be balanced as time progresses.

We must do a job of work and improve their living conditions and the next time when we meet them we should be able to tell them the nature of work we have done through the council. We must join hands and work for the common good of the people, he said.
