Sports vital for healthy body

Kandy south group correspondent

Schoolchildren and youths of the country should take to greater participation in sports and other recreations which will keep them away from bad habits like drugs and smoking.

Sports also helps to lead a healthy life as it provides exercise to the body, Principal of Hillwood College, Miss Ratnayake said.

She was addressing the schoolchildren at the conclusion of the girls' and boys' under-15 basketball tournament, organised by Hillwood College when the prizes were awarded to the winners at Hillwood College Courts in Kandy.

Ratnayake said it is not only narcotic drugs, but sportsman and sportswoman should not take performance enhancing drugs which is a way of cheating and winning. They must be honest and win the honest way using their natural talents to the optimum. With the Olympic Games around the corner, we may hear of many athletes being detected of taking performance enhancing drugs which is illegal and would even bring disgrace to their countries.
