by A. G. Piyadasa The Organisation of Professional Associations will hold its 17th annual sessions on August 13 and 14 at the BMICH. The inaugural ceremony of the sessions will be on Friday August 13 with Jayantha Dhanapala, the former United Nation's Under Secretary on Disarmament and presently the secretary of the Sri Lanka Peace Secretariat, as chief guest. M. D. D. Peiris, former Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Bogoda Premaratne, former Commissioner General, Examinations will be the guests of honour. The theme of the session is "The Nation, Civil Society and Responsive Governance". The technical sessions will be held on August 14 in Committee Room 'A' of the BMICH commencing at 8.45 a.m. The technical sessions will take the form of presentations and discussions on three sub-themes, "Historical Perspective of Governance in Sri Lanka and Present Status", "Causes that Lead the Nation to the Present Status", "Strategies for Responsive Governance", "Strategies for Responsive Governance" has five ramifications. (a) "Role and Responsibility of the Legislature", (b) "Role and Responsibility of the Judiciary", (c) "Role and Responsibility of the State Sector", (d) "Role and Responsibility of the Private Sector", "Role and Responsibility of the Civil Society". Prof. J. B. Dissanayake will speak on the topic "Historical Perspective of Governance in Sri Lanka and Present Status" followed by Prof. A. D. V. de S. Indraratne who will speak on the "Causes that Lead the nation to Present Status". Time has been allocated for discussion at the end of each presentation. Parakrama Karunaratne the President of the OPA will deliver the welcome address at the inaugural ceremony and Eng. D. D. S. Jayawardena, General Secretary will deliver the vote of thanks. The organiser of the conference is H. H. Subasinghe the President Elect of the OPA. He will introduce the theme "The Nation Civil Society and Responsive Governance" at the inaugural ceremony. |
