Asela Kuruluwansa President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will lay the foundation stone today for the new water supply scheme in Kandy. The multi-billion water project will be financed together by the Japanese International Development Bank and the Sri Lanka Government. The initial stage of the three-tier scheme is estimated to cost Rs. 4820 million of which the Japanese counterpart funds will amount to Yen 5151 million. Residents in Kandy and the suburbs have experienced serious shortages of water for a long-time, it is reported. Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Posts, Telecommunications and Upcountry Development Minister D.M. Jayaratne and Japanese Ambassador Akio Suda are expected to participate at this ceremony. |
