At the 125th anniversary celebrations of St. Stephen's Church, Negombo, Bishop of Colombo Rev. Duleep de Chickera in his charge to the congregations of St. Stephen's and 13 other congregations from churches of the Colombo North region emphasising the duties of the present generation, stressed that "we should first be thankful to the pioneers of this church, secondly, to the clergy and laity who have served faithfully throughout the years and also to ourselves, the dedicated members." Thereafter, he explained responsibilities of Christians' in today's context. "Firstly to be aware of the poverty in our society, secondly the violence that is manifest and thirdly, the suspicion of the majority of what is being done by smaller groups in our community". The anniversary service was preceded by a procession of witnesses starting from St. Mary's Church, Grand Street carrying the banners of 14 churches. After the conclusion of the service, the newly constructed parish hall/community development centre was declared open by the Bishop. Thereafter a well-documented souvenir was presented to the Bishop and certificates were distributed to the winners of Sunday School competitions held within the Colombo North region. Rev. Asiri Fernando, the Vicar welcomed the Bishop, the clergy and the laity of all the churches who gathered to be in fellowship with members of St. Stephen's Church, Negombo. |
