WB funds NE projects with govt. consent - Peter Harrold World Bank country director Peter Harrold has invited members of the Patriotic National Movement (PNM) to visit the projects funded by the WB in the North and East and clear their doubts toward the bank's activities if any. Replying to a letter to the PNM, Harrold says that all projects undertaken by the World Bank in the North and the East of Sri Lanka are carried out with the unequivocal consent and agreement of the Government of Sri Lanka. Indeed, these are projects of the Government of Sri Lanka for which the World Bank is supporting." It is the explicit policy of the Government to ensure that development assistance is made available to the North and the East of the country. As one of Sri Lanka's long-standing development partners, the World Bank supports this policy, both for humanitarian reasons and to help sustain a climate for peace. The projects aim at assisting the Sri Lankan citizens who reside in the North and East to rebuild their lives and their communities after the suffering of the twenty years of conflict. If you have questions about the activities that the World Bank is financing in the North and East, we would be delighted to arrange for site visits for your members to enable them to gauge for themselves the work carried out under these projects." Further, we would like to bring to your notice that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was deproscribed by the Government from midnight on September 4, 2002 and any meetings that the World Bank has with the LTTE is carried out with the approval of the Government. The Country Assistance Strategy has been translated into Sinhala and Tamil so that any citizen of Sri Lanka can be aware of the activities of the World Bank in Sri Lanka. It is preposterous on your part of claim in your letter to me and in the letter to Mr. James Wolfensohn that handing over a Tamil translation of the Country Assistance Strategy 2003-2006 report to Tamilselvan is a violation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1373. Mr. Wolfensohn is fully aware of and strongly supports our program in the North and East of Sri Lanka and he will no doubt be replying to you in due course." Says Peter Harold. |
