Shoaib and Younis steer Pakistan to victory

by Chris Dhambarage

Two magnificent centuries from Shoaib Malik and Younis Khan helped defending champions Pakistan register an easy 173 runs victory over Hong Kong in their Asia Cup limited overs cricket tournament group 'A' match played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

The two Pakistanis went on the rampage against some friendly bowling while adding 223 runs for the third wicket. Malik made an aggressive 118 from only 110 balls while Younis Khan cracked a splendid 144 from 122 balls with four sixes and nine boundaries.

Incidentally Younis Khan's innings had great significance as he erased the previous highest individual score of 131 made by former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga in the 1997 Asia Cup final. Pakistan of course made a disappointing start to their innings losing both openers Imran Nazir and Imran Farahat with only 51 runs on the board.

Younis Khan joined Shoaib Malik and the pair went on the attack from the start stroking the ball to all parts of the ground quite effortlessly.

Their main intention was to build up a solid foundation having already won their first game against Bangladesh by 76 runs at the same venue to reach the second phase of the tournament.

Both Shoib Malik and Younis Khan found no terrors in the Hong Kong attack and collected their runs at a tremendous pace. They really accelerated the scoring rate after the 25th over while fully exploiting their weak opponents. Malik went for a well compiled 118 and with the Pakistan total on 274.

However Younis Khan carried on with the good work with some good shot selection and made certain that Pakistan pass the three hunderd run mark quite convincingly. They even went beyond that as they finished their innings with an impressive 343 for 5 from 50 overs.

Hong Kong in reply decided to stay at the crease and play a quiet game which was a great experience for them facing the bowling of Sami, Ahmed and Razzak. Malik followed up his century with a four wicket haul but Pakistan were concerned about their extras where they conceded as many as 18 wides.
