Following President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's concern over the sinking Ginigathena town, Post and Telecommunication and Up-country Development Minister D. M. Jayaratne, accompanied by State officials visited the affected area on July 16 and inspected the buildings and stretches of road subject to devastation. Ginigathena town situated on the Kandy-Hatton Highway had 84 trade stalls which had cracked and puffed walls affected by the sinking process while certain parts of the road were depressed. About four months ago 4 boutiques on the highway collapsed due to erosion killing one person. Minister Jayaratne observed that the entire town would be submerged under the Mahaveli river at any moment. Upon Minister Jayaratne's reporting, the President directed to take steps to construct a new town in place of the sinking Ginigathena town. A Cabinet Memorandum has already been presented for approval to draw out plans for a new town. Minister Jayaratne said that the construction activities will begin in the course of next month and that erecting of temporary trade stalls will commence within this month. |
