Stop police attacks on journalists -FMM

The Free Media Movement has received the following reports. On July 14, four journalists who had been reporting on a funeral within the Kosgoda police division had been assaulted and wounded and their camera equipment damaged.

Also on the same date a photo journalist who was reporting on a protest against a casino within the Wattala Police division had been threatened and the three-wheeler she was travelling is damaged states on press release issued by the Free Media Movement yesterday.

The journalists so assaulted are Anura Yasmin of The Island newspaper, Janith de Silva of the Independent Television Network, Sujeeva Priyadarshana of Swarnavahini, S.A.Y. De Silva of Lankadeepa newspaper and Yamuni Rashmika of the Lanka Newspaper.

Whilst such harassment and attacks prevent journalists from carrying out their professional duties it further amounts to an obstruction of the peoples right to information.

The Free Media Movement requests IGP Indra de Silva to carry out a full investigation into these attacks and take necessary steps to prevent further such instances, which damage the good relations which should exist between journalists and the Police.
