Steps will be taken shortly to recover from errant drivers the expenses incurred on medical treatment for treating victims of road accidents, states Health Care, Nutrition and Uva-Wellassa Development Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. The Minister made this disclosure when he addressed the certificates and prize awarding ceremony for the winners of the All Island Children's Art Competition for Prevention of Accidents held at the BMICH, Colombo on Friday. According to Colombo National Hospital Accident Service statistics, 50 per cent of accidental deaths reported are fatal road accidents and, in the year 2003, 2,996 deaths were reported due to road accidents while 3,919 were seriously injured. 25 per cent of hospital admissions were after road accidents. Minister de Silva said that prevention of accidents is a subject which has received the attention of the World Health Organization and that a number of programmes are operative in Sri Lanka for this purpose. He further said that the road system has not expanded in proportion to the increase of vehicles on roads and that a project is already in progress to meet this demand and that both the pedestrians as well as the drivers should be mindful of road laws both in knowledge and in practice. |
