by Christie Fernando, Chilaw special correspondent

A painting and essay contest titled "What we think we will be doing in the year 2015" for Sri Lankan beneficiary children of "Terre des Hommes" ("Earth for Mankind") organisation of the Netherlands, was held in the island recently.

Other countries which participated in this contest were; Bangladesh, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Chilie, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Laos, Kenya, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, Timor, Tanzania, Uganda, and Uruguay. The children were required to articulate their vision and expectations for 2015, in their own words in an intelligible manner, in essay and art. The contributions of participants were judged by Regional Education Directors.

Girls of Jeeva Jothy Children’s Home, Batticaloa, with their exhibits at the Small Fishers Federation, Pambala, Chilaw. In the centre is Lei Brouns, “Terre des Hommes” South Asia Director for Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh.

The contributions were evaluated and sent to the regional offices. The best contributions from each country are forwarded to the head office in the Netherlands. The head office will in turn select from these a number of contributions that will be published in a booklet. It's a contest, but not a competition and there are prizes.

The primary aim was that the children, in groups, should discuss the topic. Children should be aware of what the 'big people' talk about and the decisions they take that will influence the lives of the children.
