National Run for Peace from September 24 to 26

Four hundred and eighty runners will take part in the National Run for Peace which will be worked off from September 24 to 26, 2004. It is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Asian German Sports Exchange Programme. The run is being sponsored by Holcim with MTV as the official electronic media.

40 runners each from 12 towns - Jaffna, Puttalam, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Trincomalee, Mannar, Galle, Matara, Ambalantota, Colombo, Marawila and Ampara will take part in the run and converge in Kandy where the closing ceremony will take place on September 26 at Bogambara Stadium.

The Run is being organised by the District Sports officers of the 12 towns with two student volunteers of the AGSEP Stephanie Koenigsbuescher from the International Business School of Berlin and Kathrin Weissenboeck from the University of Salsburg, Austria.12 famous sports personalities from each town will also join the run in a symbolic gesture.

The District Sports Officers will arrange overnight stay for the runners and entertainment. A workshop for the District Sports Officers was conducted at Marawila where they were briefed about their role in making the National Run for Peace a success.
