Dutch cricket Sri Lanka style For the 10th year, the Inter Club Six-a-Side Cricket tournament for the Sri Lanka Ambassador's Trophy was held in the Netherlands recently at the picturesque Amsterdam Cricket Club grounds. 10 Clubs from the 1st Division participated. The brainchild of the first resident Sri Lanka Ambassador to the Netherlands, P.G. Karunasiri, together with former Sri Lankan & Dutch National Cricketer, Flavian Aponso, introduced this form of the game and it was an instant success. Ten years on, this Tournament is the most eagerly awaited event in the Dutch Cricketing Calendar drawing enthusiastic players and spectators alike. The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Netherlands, Rupa Karunatilaka, Mrs. Karunatilaka and the President of the Royal Netherlands Cricket Board (KNCB), Rene van Ierschot were present on the day and were welcomed by the organising committee. In the final, Bijlmeer Cricket Club showed their consistent form throughout the Tournament beating Asian Cricket Club in the final and winning the Trophy for the second time. Speaking at the awards ceremony, Ambassador Rupa Karunatilaka expressed his appreciation to the Dutch Cricket Board for its continued support and to the Amsterdam Cricket Club for hosting, this tournament once again. Elaborating further, the Ambassador was deeply grateful to our firm sponsors, Abeyananda Dias and the Sri Lanka Tea Board for their financial support, Rajeewa Jayaweera and SriLankan Airlines for presenting a free Air Ticket for the Raffle Draw, clothing and caps, Anslem Perera of Mlesna (Ceylon) Ltd., for the beautiful gift packs, Jayantha Karunaratne of Imperial Tea, and all other sponsors who make this Tournament possible year after year. Rene van Ierschot in his reply thanked the Ambassador for his support and wished and thanked the Organising Committee, Flavian Aponso and Russel Kern for continuing this event, which brings Sri Lanka and the Netherlands closer, and strengthening the existing bonds between the two countries. This tournament has exceeded all its expectations and is growing in popularity. |
