St. Michael's clinch peace cager title by Chris Dhambarage St. Michael's College clinched the peace basketball title when they defeated St. Anne's College Kurunegala by 79 points to 46 points in the final played at the Rev. Fr. Herbet Memorial Stadium in Batticaloa on Sunday. In a repeat of last years final St. Michael's College took total control of the game after an early setback and went on to register a comfortable victory at the end. They had a very bad start to the game and were trailing 10-15 at the end of the first quarter. But they settled down beautifully from thereonwards and played to their true form in front of their home crowd. St. Michael's College virtually sealed the game in their favour by building up a massive 69-30 lead at the end of the third quarter. They really made use of the home conditions with star player M. K. Shiran putting up a splendid performance to win the best shooters award. He was no doubt their most outstanding player in the whole tournament and lived upto expectations with another brilliant all round performance. In the semifinals St. Michael's College outplayed St. Anthony's College Kandy 72-55 having led 35-22 at half time while St. Anne's College Kurunegala routed Holy Cross College Kalutara by a massive margin of 120 points to 68 having led 54-22 at half time. Meanwhile St. Anthony's College won the consolation final with an easy 91 points to 57 points win over Holy Cross College Kalutara. The tournament was conducted by the St. Michael's College Oldboy's Association Colombo Branch and sponsored by Hatton National Bank Limited and Browns Group of Company. |
