There are organs to set laws in motion - G.L.

by Ariyaratne Ganegoda and Nirushi Wimalaweera.

UNP MP Prof G.L. Peiris yesterday called for the amending of Article 17 of the Constitution to ensure an independent media culture in the country.

Addressing a media conference at the Office of the Opposition Leader in Colombo Peiris accused the Government of engaging in a witch-hunt against the opposition politicians in order to divert public resentment against the Government.

"Whether a supporter of the UNP or anybody else commits an offence there is a legal procedure to follow against the offender. There are organs to set the law in motion. We are vehemently opposing any action sidestepping the law enforcing institutions, stated Professor Peiris.

He further said that he was requested by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to explain to the media the Opposition Leader's personal view that the Government was bent on a process of dealing a blow on the UNP leadership. The Government is pursuing a policy not in keeping with the law and justice, but, in furtherance of political gains, stated Professor Peiris.

He further said that the UNP, as a clean party, has no objection to punishing the offenders, but, that the laid down rules and regulations must be observed without political interference in the course of the judicial process.

Gampaha District MP John Amaratunga said that as the former Minister, in charge of the subject of the police, he expressed his delight over the recent police promotions made by the Police Commission that was established during the regime of the UNP.
