The youth will not be cheated again. That is why President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga thought of forming this 'Thurunu Shakthi Yovun Vishesa Karya Sadaka Balakaya. Thurunu Shakthi Youth Special Task Force to empower the youth, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jeevan Kumaratunga said. The Minister addressing the inaugural meeting of the "Thurunu Sakthi" Youth Special Task Force held recently at the National Youth Centre, Maharagama, said although National Youth Services Council was founded in 1967, 37 years had passed, but the expectations of the council were not met yet. 'During the last two and a half years the previous regime did nothing for the benefit of the youth. The Government funds allocated for 2003 was Rs. 208 million out of which Rs. 198 million were used for staff salary payments. 'Not a single cent was spent for the development projects of the youth. The usual programmes such as the National Youth Sports Festival and the National Youth Awards Festival were not held in 2003. The youths were fed up with the youth clubs movement and most of them deserted it. All the vocational training centres were closed down. Chairman and Director General of the NYSC Niel Bandara Hapuhinna visited these places and made arrangements to re-open them. This newly organised youth Special Task Force will be a new era for the youth with its proposal to absorb 100,000 youth for the force representing all youth clubs in the island. |
