Jaffna engineer to develop brass and aluminium industry

Small and Medium Enterprise Developers (SMED), a project of the Friedrich - Naumann-Stiftung of Germany (FNSt) and Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) recently organised a training program for Miss. Kavitha Sabaratnam, an Engineer from Jaffna, who had passed out from the University of Moratuwa, in Chemical and Process Engineering for their project in Jaffna to develop the brass and aluminium industry which will be launched jointly with the National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC).

NCPC is a UNIDO project funded by Norway. The host organisation SMED will help the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Yarlpanam (CCIY) to develop this industry through improving productivity and minimising waste of resources such as material and energy.

"Hela Kala Brass Work (Pvt) Ltd", Uthuwankanda, Mawanella, Managing Director. Ananda Kularatne has offered to train Kavitha in Corporate Social Responsibility and support the peace building effort.

Factory Manager of Agrotechnica and president of the Foundry Development Association (FDA) Melwin Amarasinghe has also offered to help in this effort.

FNSt which established SMED has the vision of wealth creation for peace building and poverty reduction.

FNSt and its partner, the Federation of Chambers of Commerce in Sri Lanka (FCCISL) has built a strong 'commercial voice', utilising the expertise of their joint project, SMED to strengthen economic liberalisation and Free Market policies.

FCCISL and SMED play a pivotal role in strengthening the SME sector to be competitive, productive and self-reliant and provide more opportunities for wealth creation and employment under free market conditions.

The Friedrich Naumann Stiftung (FNSt) as the German Foundation strives to enlarge the rights of the citizens in all spheres of life and believes in the citizen's freedom to make decisions in all areas of politics.
