India to continue its peace efforts with Pakistan Washington, Wednesday (PTI) Despite a change in government in New Delhi, India will continue its peace initiatives with Pakistan allaying fears that tensions with its neighbour would impede India's rise, a report has said. "Concerns were raised that the new government would be unable to follow Vajpayee's efforts over the last year to promote a wide-ranging peace initiatives with Pakitan and that new tensions with Pakistan would impede India's rise," a study titled "India report" published by John E Carbaugh, a consultant on Asia, said. "However, for the most part, it appears that the new Indian Govenment is allaying these concerns and fears," the report said. Despite initial worries, Carbaugh said, "US officials were overall reassured that India's positive economic and foreign policy goals of the last few years will continue under Manmohan Singh." Likewise, they were cautiously optimistic that US-India ties will continue to strengthen, it said. "Partly dictating this US view," "is the likelihood, if not quite inevitability, of India's evolution into a major power - and the need for the US to be allied to such an influential player," Carbaugh said. |
