Anil and Devin win P & O Nedlloyd Keells Trophies By Richard Dwight The sport sailing seems to be coming into its own, with things brightening up, with many a regatta both domestic and international, being lined up for participants as well as followers of sailing. This was very much in evidence last Sunday, when in ideal pleasant conditions on the placid waters of the Bolgoda Lake, the yachting regatta sponsored by P & O Nedlloyd Keells took place. The regatta was conducted in two divisions, a senior level and a junior level, in the senior event there were 24 boats made up of GP-14, enterprise and laser, accounting for 48 sailors, with helm and crew in each boat. In the junior event which was limited to children between the ages 9 to 15 years, there were 14 participants sailing single handed in their respective boats, referred to as 'optimist'. Sailing a GP-14, the only boat in the race made in Sri Lanka and sporting a spinnaker, Anil Gunewardena crewed by his wife Michelle, did well to tilt the sails to catch the winds to forge ahead and, with deft tackking and planning got ahead of Joseph Kenney crewed by Pramukshi Kariyawasam to win, with W. P. K. Janaka crewed by K. D. S. Kumara of the Navy coming third. In the junior race, Devin oonewardena, of Stafford International was the clear winner with Radhika Jirasinha of Ladies College and Viren Dias of CIS being first and second runners-up respectively. The awards were given out by the British High Commissioner, Stephen Evans, whilst Romesh David represented the sponsors P & O Nedlloyd Keells. |
