Kandy Esala pageant begins on July 18 by Pradeep Kumara Dharmaratne This year's historic Kandy Esala Pageant will begin with the kap planting ceremony at the Sathara Maha (four main) Devalayas on July 18. The Devala Peraheras will be conducted daily from July 18 to 21. The first kumbal perahera will parade the streets on July 22 night, after which kumbal peraheras will be held daily until July 26. The grandeur Randoli Perahera will begin on July 27 culminating in the final Randoli Maha Perahera on July 31. The pageant will conclude with the water cutting ceremony at the Getambe ferry on August 1 followed by the Day Perahera, said Diyawadane Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne. There will be enhanced special bus and rail services to cater to the vast crowds expected in Kandy to view the pageant. Central Province DIG Nimal Mediwaka said the police have made special security arrangements to enable people to view the pageant without hassle. Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (Lake House) will illuminate the Sri Dalada Maligawa premises during the perahera season and a large number of institutions and Civic Organisations have come forward to provide facilities to the artistes participating in the pageant. |
