'Navodya' Rural Schools project begins The Education Ministry's new initiatives to upgrade and develop rural schools identified through the 'Navodya' Project will be highlighted by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at a special ceremony at Tholangamuwa Central College today. The Navodya Project targets at least one to two schools per Divisional Secretariat division for development into model schools for each area, the Education Ministry said. These schools are being equipped with IT labs, science laboratories, libraries and trained teachers. The Government has allocated a big slice of its budget for these special programs. In addition rapidly developing the 54 Kannangara Central Schools with Asian Development Bank assistance and model primary schools with JICA assistance and the accelerated development of medium size schools in and around Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle and Matara have already started. While enhancing equity in access to basic primary and secondary education, the Government also believes that improving infrastructure and other facilities in rural schools will eventually ease the thrust for admission to the 324 prestigious National Schools in the country. The Government's vision is to make available quality educational facilities to the majority of school going children in this country. |
