Bourse gains momentum

Positive investor sentiment propelled by the release of first quarter financial results by the Central Bank on Tuesday recording 6.2 % GDP growth, the Colombo Bourse gained momentum yesterday with benchmark indices recording gains. The All Share Price Index bounced to 1,358.47 points from 1,339.44 points while the Milanka Price Index increased to 2,069.08 points from 2,033.06 points on Wednesday.

Turnover for the day recorded Rs 459,069,022. According to stock brokers, the unchanged economic output of the country in the first quarter of 2004 attracted investor confidence and the Economic Policy Statement by the government today will further attract investor sentiment.

The day's heavily traded stocks were Colombo Land, Maskeliya, Mullers, JKH, CF Venture Fund and SLT. Domestic purchases were Rs 4,292 million and foreign purchases Rs 222 million.

Mullers, CFI, Fort Land, Touchwood and HNB Assurance were the top five gainers. Asiri Hospitals announced a 7.5 % interim dividend.
