Pak opposition parties file candidate for interim PM ISLAMABAD, Tuesday (AFP) Pakistan's secular opposition parties fielded a joint candidate for interim prime minister after the surprise weekend resignation of Zafarullah Jamali and dissolution of his cabinet, a party official said. A new leader of parliament will be chosen at a special parliamentary session on Tuesday and become interim prime minister. Ruling party figures have said President Pervez Musharraf has picked outgoing Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz to be the new prime minister, but he first needs to win a parliamentary seat in a by-election expected within two months. The Democratic Alliance, a secular grouping of anti-Musharraf and pro-democracy opposition parties, nominated Makhdoom Amin Fahim for the post of interim prime minister, a party official said. "Makhdoom Amin Fahim has filed his nomination papers for the election of leader of the house," senator Farhatullah Babar, spokesman for the Pakistan Peoples Party, told AFP. The post of interim prime minister is however expected to go to veteran politician Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, leader of the ruling pro-Musharraf Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q). The PML-Q and its allies hold a majority in the assembly. The alliance of six Islamist parties, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), has not put up a candidate. |
