LTTE expresses commitment to Ceasefire Agreement by Ranil Wijayapala Despite the LTTE decision to withdraw from meetings with the Sri Lanka Army in the East they have express their commitment to the Ceasefire Agreement. The LTTE gave this assurance to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Chief in Kilinochchi, SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland said. Haukland told the Daily News yesterday that SLMM was continuing its efforts to convince the LTTE the importance of participating at those regular meetings. "I don't think the LTTE's decision would jeopardize the Ceasefire Agreement but it does make things difficult", Haukland added. SLMM Chief Trond Furuhovde flew to Kilinochchi on Monday to have discussions with the LTTE Political Wing Leader S. P. Thamil Selvan about their decision to withdraw from the regular meetings with the Security Forces in the East. However, Military Spokesman Colonel Sumedha Perera told the Daily News yesterday that the SLMM had not officially informed the Sri Lanka Army, of the LTTE's latest decision. "We are only learning things from the media", Colonel Perera added. He said the meeting which was scheduled to be held at Akkaraipattu was between the LTTE and the Special Task Force. The LTTE and the Sri Lanka Army regularly meets at the Vavunativu Divisional Secretariat and the SLMM has not so far fixed a date for this meeting, he said. LTTE Political Wing leader S. P. Thamil Selvan following his meeting with the SLMM Chief Trond Furuhovde has told the media that they had 'very reliable evidence' to prove that the Sri Lanka Army was using Karuna to create mayhem in Batticaloa. |
