Mother tortures only child for refusing to show love

Nawalapitiya group correspondent

Nawalapitiya Police took into custody a 23-year-old mother who is said to have tortured her only daughter, who is three years old.

According to the Nawalapitiya Police the suspected mother, a resident of Soysakelle, Nawalapitiya had left for Jordan leaving her seven month old daughter Buana with her aunt Yogeswari, (23) a married woman without children.

The child's father, a labourer attached to the Urban Council, Nawalapitiya had taken no interest about his own daughter. The foster mother, who did not have children had brought up the child lovingly.

When the mother returned home after three years the infant has refused to go near her. During the past seven months she had tried her best to win the heart of her child and when she failed in all her attempts she had threatened, scolded, pinched, beat, burnt the child.

According to a complaint made to the police by the aunt, the suspect was arrested and produced before the Nawalapitiya Magistrate who remanded her for 14 days. The child is warded at the Nawalapitiya base hospital.
