CNH hit by major crisis over doctor transfer isssue

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

The Colombo National Hospital is hit by a major crisis with doctors earmarked for transfers refusing to leave for their new stations which is threatening to trigger another health strike.

While 82 doctors at the Colombo National Hospital have abided by the transfer orders 69 medicos are refusing to leave the CNH, hospital authorities said.

Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers Association(GMOA) yesterday requested the Heads of the Health Department to act according to the accepted departmental transfer regulations based on the Grade Medical Officers transfer scheme amidst the present controversy regarding the transfer of doctors at the Colombo National Hospital.

In a letter addressed to the Director General of Health Services Dr. Athula Kahandaliyange, the GMOA's Secretary Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya requested for the payment of salaries of Medical Officers on transfer orders but only for this month.

His letter comes in the wake of a decision taken by the Acting Director of CNH Dr. Rani Fernando to stop the payment of monthly salaries of Medical Officers who had refused to accept the transfers given to them. "So far 82 doctors have gone accepting their release orders but only 69 are refusing to go," said Dr. Fernando adding that there are some doctors who had remained at the CNH for about 20 years.

However, a spokesman of the GMOA's branch union at the CNH said they were not against the transfers. "We are only urging for regularising of the transfers. Don't mix up transfers with the salary issue," he added.

He said they would be compelled to launch trade union action tomorrow if the Acting Director fails to pay their salaries. "Our branch union will be meeting today to take a decision on this." A senior Ministry official said a doctor who is appointed to a special post could remain at the hospital only for two years while others only four years.
