A donation of drugs worth Rs. 1.5 million to the Cancer Hospital, Maharagama, out of the personal funds of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was one of the series of functions that took place to commemorate President Kumartunga's 59th birthday yesterday (June 29). Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and Presidential Secretary W.J.S. Karunaratne attended the occasion. Minister Siripala de Silva said that incidence of cancer is one of the major fatal diseases devouring the nation and that the Government is paying more attention to the treatment and preventive measures against the deadly disease. In order to ease the congestion at the Mahargama Cancer Hospital, another cancer unit will be established near Colombo, he said. He thank the President for her benevolent act of providing assistance to this national service to mark her birthday. |
