Ananda beat Thomians in a thriller

by Chris Dhambarage

Ananda College survived a fierce late rally to register a thrilling eight points to five points win over S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia in their Singer inter school under 19 'A' division league rugby tournament match played at Longden Place yesterday.

The winners collected their points from one try and one penalty while the Thomians responded with a solitary try. All scoring was done in the second half.

The Anandians had the better of the exchanges during the first 15 minutes of play during which time they missed at least two real scoring opportunities. The forwards put up a splendid performance to match the heavy Thomian pack and also launched a series of counter attacks that surprised the opposition.

The Thomians after a shaky start settled down during the latter stages of the first half with their forwards winning a couple of line outs and also dominating the set pieces. But they too failed to add the finishing touches and were guilty of dropping the ball at some vital moments of the game.

This turned out to be a costly one as the Ananda three quarters hit back strongly with a series of moves which were initiated from their own territory. The Thomians however put up a solid defence while playing under tremendous pressure with some resolute tackling.

But Ananda were eventually rewarded for their hard work earning a 40 metre penalty shortly after half time and was converted by fly half Nipuna Vimukthi.

The Anandians scored their first try almost immediately following some brilliant work from their forwards and the three quarters where they combined well to force play into their opponents territory.

They won a line out close to the Thomian goal line and second row forward Hasitha Perera crashed through the blind side to touch down near the corner flag. Fly half Nipuna Vimukthi failed to add the finishing touches but Ananda led 8 nil after just five minutes of play in the second half.

The Thomians came back strongly with scrum half Dinesh Siriwardena producing a beautiful solo before falling over despite being challenged by a couple of defenders.

However the important conversion was missed by Sanjeewa Samarasinghe who also fumbled with a penalty during injury time. Shamrath Fernando refereed.
