Susanthika and Darsha compete against each other tomorrow by Dinesh Weerawansa Star Sri Lanka sprinters Susanthika Jayasinghe and Damayanthi Darsha will compete against each other after a long lapse in the women's 200m at the second leg of the Asian Grand Prix 2004 Series to be worked off at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo on Sunday. Before Jayasinghe came into the limelight in 1993, it was Darsha who was undisputed sprint queen in Sri Lanka dominating in women's 100m and 200m. But Jayasinghe's steady progress saw Darsha switching on to women's 400m with success - winning back to back gold medals in her new event at Asian Games in 1998 and 2002. In the meantime, Jayasinghe sealed her place in women's 200m winning two historic medals for Sri Lanka at the 1997 IAAF World Championships (silver) and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games (bronze). Since then, they have hardly met each other in a major women's 200m final and it will be interesting to see what challenge Darsha could throw. In a way, presence of Darsha would do good for Jayasinghe to speed up and go for the Olympic qualifying timing that she is looking for. South Asian Games 100m gold medallist Jani Chathurangani Silva is the third Sri Lankan taking part in women's 200m. The other five competitors drawn up for women's 200m final are Lyubov Perepelova (Uzbekistan), Lisha Chen (China), Guzet Khubbieva (Uzbekistan), Susuki Ayumi (Japan) and Saraswati Saha (India). |
