Deraniyagala Roving Corr. "If I am elected to the Sabaragamuwa PC as a member, I pledge to resolve all problems of the minorities whether they be Muslims or Tamils. This is a solemn promise I make to the minority population in the Kegalle and Ratnapura Districts of the Sabaragamuwa PC. At no stage I will deviate from this pledge, even if pressure was brought on me. This assurance was given by UNP candidate for Sabaragamuwa PC election Javahar Hadjiyar at Kottawatte, in the Mawanella electorate when he addressed a meeting in support of his candidature. Hadjiyar said when he was a member in the last PC, he had rendered yeoman service to estate workers, which he would assure to continue in the event he is elected again. He said that many problems of the estate Tamils remain intact, which he would voice in the PC to redress them. In the last five years of PC administration he was able to resolve many minority problems in the Kegalle District. He has donated his personal money for the development of estate Hindu Kovils. He has also utilised his monthly emolument to provide scholarships to 150 Tamil and Muslim Children and encourage their higher education. These students are from poor families and not of the affluent class. In order to resolve the shortage of Tamil teachers in estate schools, Javahar Hadjiyar said, he voiced there shortcomings in the PC. As a result the Maliboda Estate Tamil School in Deraniyagala which was functioning with one teacher was able to get an additional teacher. In conclusion he said, even if he was unable to obtain funds from the PC to honour the promises given to people of Kegalle and Ratnapura, he would utilise his own money and honour the pledges given. Therefore, he said people in especially the minority community should place confidence in him and return him to the Sabaragamuwa PC. |
