Three-wheeler drivers can help solve crime - Police

The Borella branch of the All Ceylon Three-wheeler Driver's Association held its general meeting at the Borella C.W.W. Kannangara Maha Vidyalaya hall recently.

The meeting conducted with the co-operation of the Borella Police was presided over by the President of the Association Lalith Dharmasekera.

Speaking on the occasion, the patron of the Association Ven. Vatinapaha Somananda Thera said that those who have taken to three-wheeler hiring as a means of livelihood have now become an important segment of the society.

Therefore, it was in the fitness of things that they should be given due recognition and the necessary help from the law enforcing authorities to perform their tasks with dedication and enthusiasm.

The formation of the Three-wheeler Driver's Association has already had had a salutary effect in that the members have now even been provided with a special uniform and an identification badge too.

Continuing his speech Ven. Somananda Thera commended the Borella Police authorities for all the assistance they were providing to the members of the association to help render a better three-wheeler service to the public by emphasising the need for the drivers to follow the traffic laws properly and conduct themselves well by romanising several special programs meant for them.

B.G. Wijetilleke, IP, Administration OIC, Intelligence Unit of the Borella Police in his speech said that the three-wheeler drivers could play an important role in helping the Police authorities in combating crimes in the area by passing on vital information, if not openly at least covertly to the Police.

Wijetilleke pointed out that there was a popular belief that no crime committed could escape the eyes of the three-wheeler drivers operating in the particular area. Therefore, their role in this respect assumed much significance, he said.

The OIC, Borella Police, IP W.A. Anura, OIC Crimes IP Asoka Silva, and IP Traffic Police Ratnayake too were present at the meeting.
