Fumigation not a practical remedy for dengue control

A meeting to review the progress of dengue control activities in the Kegalle district, presided over by Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana was held at Kegalle General Hospital recently.

The Minister said "Controlling dengue by fumigation is not practical which is why it is crucial to keep the environment free of mosquito breeding places." He said fumigation is an ineffective method for preventing the dengue menace but it may be important for politicians to further their political career.

Attention was drawn towards initial steps that should be implemented on the level of the Director and Deputy Provincial health service. Regional health officers submitted 10 reports in relation to 10 divisions in the Kegalle district, outlining the trend in spread of the disease. "There are 140 types of mosquitoes. Although mosquitoes can be controlled by means of fumigation, the larva remains unharmed by the fumes.

Larva can be destroyed only by removing the environmental factors which leads to mosquito breeding."

The meeting was convened with the intention of formulating a strategic methodology to control dengue in the Kegalle district by the Science and Technology Society of the district.

It was revealed at the meeting that Mawanella has been identified as the largest breeding ground within the district. One of the reasons cited was the high humidity factor in the area.

Doctors, officials of the Provincial Health Service and Director/ Education Sirisena Rajapakse also attended the meeting.
