Launch of Courteous Drivers Week programme today

The Courteous Drivers Week Programme intended to minimize the high incidence of road accidents will be officially launched with the holding of a Motor Vehicle Rally starting from Galle Face Green, Colombo at 9.30 a.m. today, June 21.

The Motor Vehicle Rally today comprising cars, buses, lorries, three wheelers, motor cycles and pedal cycles will wend its way from Galle Face Green along Galle Road, up to Kalubowila Junction and from there through Nugegoda Junction will proceed along High Level Road up to the Vihara Maha Devi Park Open Air theatre where a meeting presided by the Minister of Public Security, Law and Order and Deputy Minister of Defence Ratnasiri Wickremanayake will be held at 11 a.m. secretary Tilak Ranaviraja, IGP Indra de Silv and Secretaries of Ministries will also be present. A Road Safety Demonstration will also be held with participation of school traffic wardens and Police.

The Programme launched by the Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order in association with the Police Department on a directive of the President will entail an extensive awareness programme on road rules and regulations and also strict enforcement of the existing laws on traffic offenders and reckless drivers. It will also ensure repair of roads, clearing of roads and restoration of signals, road signs and marking which need repair and redone. Steps are also to be taken to identify unroadworthy vehicles and prevent them from running on roads.

For the first time several other Ministries and Departments which have some duties to perform to ensure road safety have also been assigned specific tasks to be preformed during the week and thereafter when the programme will be continued on a permanent basis.
