New Mahanayake Thera of Malwatte Chapter

by Pradeep Kumara Dharmaratne and Asela Kuruluwansa

Most. Ven. Thibbotuwawe Siddhartha Sri Sumangala Thera was elected unanimously as the new Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter yesterday. Most Ven. Sumangala Thera is the 26th Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter.

The new Mahanayake Thera was elected by the Sangha Council of the Malwatte Chapter following the passing away of Most. Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Mahanayake Thera. The Most Ven. Thera's name was proposed by Ven. Walgowwagoda Wimalabuddhi Thera and seconded by Ven. Henepola Nandasiri Thera.

The meeting was chaired by Ven. Rajakeeya Panditha Ambanwelle Pannasekara Anunayake Thera. He was the Anunayake of the Chapter and Chief Incumbent of the Ridhi Viharaya at the time of his appointment as the Mahanayake Thera. The Most Ven. Thera was born on May 30, 1944 in Matale and named Lokubandara Thibbotuwawe by his parents Tikiri Bandara Nilame and Loku Kumarihamy.

After accepting the sacred high position in the Buddhist Order, the Most Venerable Maha Nayaka Thera expressed his sentiments and stated that the Kaaraka Sangha Sabha of the Malwatta Chapter by its unanimous decision bestowed upon him this noble position with a host of expectations for the protection of the Saasana, and that in keeping with their expectations he will serve the country, the nation and Buddhism free from lapses to preserve the dignity of the sublime position he undertook.

Continuing his Anusasana, the Venerable Maha Nayaka Thera said that instead of giving promises to forget after some time, he will firmly dedicate himself to do his duties by the Saasana and the country and provide necessary advice and guidance on national issues after consulting the views of the Kaaraka Sangha Sabha of the Malwatta Chapter. To do this he sought the cooperation of the Government as well as the opposition. "I shall dedicate myself to consolidate and strengthen the unity among the entire Buddhist clergy including the members of the Kaaraka Sangha Sabha and the other residential Bhikkus", emphasised the Venerable Maha Nayaka Thera.

He entered the Sasana at the age of 13 and received higher ordination in 1964. He was appointed to the Sangha Council of the Malwatte Chapter in 1968 and as the Chief Incumbent of the Ridhi Viharaya in 1974.

He was appointed as the deputy registrar of the Malwatte Chapter in 1979 and as the registrar in 1985. The Most Ven. Thera was appointed as the Anunayake of the Malwatte Chapter in May 1992. Central Province Governor Monty Gopollawa, Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne and Central Province DIG Nimal Mediweka were present at yesterday's meeting at the Malwatte Viharaya.
