Curfew imposed on Gujarat village after violence AHMEDABAD, India, Tuesday (AFP) A curfew was imposed in a village in the western Indian state of Gujarat after communal violence erupted Monday following the stabbing to death of a Hindu by a Muslim, police said. The stabbing occurred on June 9 in Savarkundla village of Amreli district, more than 300 kilometres (190 miles) southwest of the state capital Ahmedabad. "Tension spread through the village after the news of the death of the Hindu reached here," an officer told AFP. "Hindus burnt a truck and resorted to stone-pelting. Police caned the crowd and curfew was imposed to control the situation." The 55-year-old Hindu was stabbed by a Muslim in a scuffle over a cricket match, the officer added. Hardline Hindu organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council, or VHP) has called for a strike in Amreli district on Tuesday to protest the killing. The VHP was at the forefront of widespread communal violence in 2002 which erupted after an allegedly Muslim mob torched a train carrying Hindu activists, killing 59. Former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee Sunday blamed the Gujarat riots for the rightwing Hindu nationalist BJP party's defeat in last month's national elections. |
