With this time he managed to retain the Preethi Palliyaguru Challenge Trophy which is awarded for day's fastest driver. Though Nishan recorded the best time for the day he was not able to lower the record what he established last year 35.94 secs. All top riders and drivers failed to lower their records due to bad conditions that prevailed on the track after heavy rains on the previous day. The Formula Cars event which was introduced for the first time saw two veterans Suranjith Premadasa and Rohan de Silva in action. Suranjith had to give up when he failed control his machine at the Southern Corner, this gave victory to Rohan de Silva, who clocked 38.30 secs. The other two drivers who had mishap on this day were Dilshard Hamdoon and Romani de Silva. The oldest competitor to have a go on the famous Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb was N. P. G. Mendis Silva the father of late Preethi Palliyaguru, President of Southern Motor Sports Club in whose memory the challenge Trophy is named. |
