Favourites win easily on day one

All preliminary round bouts in eleven weight categories were completed on the opening day of the Layton Cup Boxing meet organised by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka and worked off at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium in Kotahena.

The best effort probably came from K. A. Alexander of Unichela in the light fly weight under 48 kg category class boutt where he outclassed S. A. Chandrasekera of Sri Lanka Army on points 38-12. In the same weight category C. P. Patabendi of Seevali BC also outclassed N. G. Sumanaweera of YMCA Kandy 21-7 with the referee deciding to stop the contest in round two.

In the fly weight under 51 kg category class bout C. P. Abeyratne of Slimline had the better of P. M. Seneviratne of Kingswood following a disqualification. In the same weight category G. L. Kumara of Sri Lanka Army defeated C. P. Kumara of Sri Lanka Navy on points 34-26.

In the light welter weight under 64 kg category class bout K. Perera of Sri Lanka Army overcame his first hurdle quite easily with his opponent and teammate I. Wasantha retiring during round two.

Another soldier N. Davaratne also won his first bout in the same weight category defeating teammate H. C. Jayatilleke on points 22-8.

In the welter weight under 69 kg category class bout D. Perera of Nugegoda BC had the better of R. Dangalla of Unichella on points 31-18. Meanwhile in the bantam weight under 54 kg category class event quarter finals N. Jayasundera of Sri Lanka Army defeated K. Jayakody also from Sri Lanka Army in a close contest on points 25-22.

In the same weight category D. Samarasekera of Sri Lanka Army beat K. Sumanasiri and D. Wickremasinghe of Slimline beat G. Kumara of Wattegama BC with the referee deciding to stop the contest in rount two. Another top boxer M. D. Wanniarachchi of Slimline received a walk over from P. Weerasinghe of Sri Lanka Navy BC.

In the feather weight under 57 kg category class event M. Bandara of Sri Lanka Army defeated W. A. Wijesinghe of YMCA Kandy on points 24-17. In the light fly weight under 50 kg category class event R. M. U. Bandara from Slimline had the better of R. P. Weerasinghe of Sri Lanka Air Force on points 40-11.
