Superb second half rally helps Police win

Sri Lanka Police Sports Club produced a superb second half rally to beat Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club by 26 points to 18 points in their Caltex inter club 'A' division league rugby tournament match played at Police Park yesterday.

Police SC collected their points from two goals and four penalties while Navy SC responded with one goal, one try and two penalties. However at half time Navy SC led 15-6.

Navy SC took the initiative with a stupendous performance as they scored twice within the first half an hour to set up an exciting contest. The sailors really matched the heavy Police SC pack and also threatened to score on more than a couple of occasions.

They even surprised their opponents in the line outs and in the set pieces and were equally brilliant in the loose.

Navy SC took the lead after referee Shamrath Fernando awarded them a penalty try following some dangerous play by a Police defender.

This try was converted and Navy SC led seven nil at that stage. Inspired by this early success Navy SC kept the pressure on throughout the first half and added one more try to their tally and also fired across a 30 metre penalty to further consolidate their position.

The Policemen did not know what hit them at the start of the game as they struggled to get on terms while losing some valuable possession in the line outs and in the set pieces.

They managed to put over just a couple of penalties in the first half but were somewhat off colour in all departments of the game. Police SC came into the game shortly after half time while scoring their first try through Hettiarachchi following a superb effort from their three quarters.

This try was converted by Harshana Wijeweera and Police SC had reduced the margin to just a couple of points 13-15.

They never looked back from there onwards and went on to score another try through Anjula de Silva with Wijeweera adding the extra points. In fact full back Wijeweera played a dominant role as he also put over four penalties to seal the game in their favour.

Shamrath Fernando refereed.
