Panadol to our cricketers' rescue by Sa'adi Thawfeeq GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), popularly associated in Sri Lanka with the pain reliever Panadol tied up with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) yesterday as the exclusive official healthcare company. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with SLC at Taj Hotel where under the agreement GSK will provide medical care and pharmaceuticals including analgesic products for use of the Sri Lanka cricket team. The sponsorship package is for Rs. 2.25 million for a period of two years and came into effect from yesterday. GSK is not just another company but an established one in the field of sports. They already have world superstars like Sachin Tendulkar and Virendra Sehwag from cricket, Michael Owen from football and Johnny Wilkinson from rugby signed up to advertise their products. Indian cricketers Tendulkar and Sehwag promote a nourishment drink called 'Boost' while England's Owen and Wilkinson promote an energy drink 'Lucozade'. "Being given the responsibility to safeguard the health of the national cricket team is a rare honour and privilege," said GSK chairman/managing director Akhil Chandra. "We are proud to be associated with the national sport of the country which touches the lives of all Sri Lankans across the length and breadth of the island." "Few moments can match the exhilaration the country felt watching Sri Lanka's ace spinner Muttiah Muralitharan become the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Panadol too is an extricable part of all Sri Lankan homes, playing the role of Sri Lanka's most trusted pain reliever for decades," he said. SLC president Mohan de Silva said that cricket is all about building up partnerships and their association with GSK was the beginning of a long journey. "Not only the cricketers but we understand that the cricket fans too stand to gain a lot from this partnership in association with St. John's Ambulance," he said. The first event in the calendar cover this agreement will be the South African tour here starting late next month. |
